I couldn't agree with you more, T. Lawrence!
In fact, I wrote this to William Booth:
Mr. Booth,
Your article, "Drug Cartels Target Mormon Clans in Mexico" is inaccurate.
The polygamist clan in Mexico is not "Mormon," a slang word used to refer to members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints because of their belief in the Book of Mormon.
Members in good standing, or Mormons, do not practice polygamy. As an educated individual, I feel this article is inaccurate. If this particular clan believes themselves to be Christians, practicing some of the Mormon beliefs, then refer to the clan as Christians, not Mormons, since the clan does not hold membership in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
I would hope your career in journalism has focused on making sure what you write is accurate BEFORE it is published. That's a big responsibility that I hope you do not take lightly.
Furthermore, making gross generalizations is not only unprofessional, but reflects poorly on you as an individual.
I believe your article had the best of intentions to be news worthy, making readers aware of the tragedies that have occurred. I would hope in the future, though, that articles written by you and published by The Washington Post accurately depict the facts.
